Yam Kumari Paudel
Yam Kumari Poudel, a 41-year-old visionary from Tilottama-7, Samaveshi Tole, is the driving force behind KushalMangal Nursery. From a young age, Poudel believed in the importance of entrepreneurship over traditional employment. Her journey is a testament to her determination and innovative spirit, demonstrating how one individual's efforts can significantly impact the local economy and community. Poudel’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident early on, but her marriage and subsequent family responsibilities initially diverted her business ambitions. Despite these challenges, she remained socially and politically active, with a persistent belief in the potential of women to contribute to production and economic growth. The turning point came when Poudel, along with her husband, began achieving success in their business endeavors. This success rekindled her desire to pursue something independently. The frequent news reports about the massive import of flowers from India deeply affected her and spurred her into action. Determined to reduce dependency on imported flowers, she launched a campaign to promote local floriculture. Poudel gathered a team of like-minded women, including Beli Bhattrai, Sarojani Bharti, and Chanda Basyaal, and together they started cultivating flowers. The primary challenge Poudel faced was breaking into a market dominated by imported flowers. She also had to overcome societal expectations and family responsibilities. However, her determination and the support of her husband played a crucial role in overcoming these obstacles. Opportunities arose from the increasing awareness and support for local products. Poudel's venture tapped into a growing market demand for domestically produced flowers, especially during festival seasons. Additionally, her participation in the Daayitwa Rural Enterprise Acceleration Program provided her with the necessary skills, knowledge, and networking opportunities to expand her business. Daayitwa, in collaboration with the Tilottama Municipality, played a pivotal role in Poudel’s journey. The Municipality Mayor’s Daayitwa Rural Enterprise Acceleration Program offered her the training and support needed to scale her business. This program not only provided her with a clearer vision and strategic direction but also helped establish her social and entrepreneurial identity. Poudel's efforts have yielded substantial monetary gains. By cultivating marigolds and other flowers, she has significantly reduced the import of flowers from India, which directly contributes to the local economy. Her business has thrived, especially during peak seasons like Tihar, bringing in considerable income. KushalMangal Nursery and the associated agro farm have also had a profound impact on the community. Poudel has employed around half a dozen individuals, empowering other women and promoting local economic growth. The nursery offers a variety of plants, fruit saplings, and flower saplings, and provides training to other farmers, thereby fostering a culture of self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship. Yam Kumari Poudel’s journey from a dreamer to a successful entrepreneur is an inspiring example of how determination, support, and the right opportunities can transform lives. Her efforts not only benefit her financially but also contribute to the community by providing employment and promoting local production. Poudel's story is a shining example of the positive impact that entrepreneurial spirit and community support can have on local development.
