Sunita Kumari Regmi
Sunita Kumari Regmi, a passionate entrepreneur from Tilottama-3, Janakinagar, embarked on a remarkable journey to transform the local agricultural landscape. Despite having no prior farming experience, Sunita saw a unique opportunity in the Nepali market, which was heavily reliant on flower imports from India. Driven by a vision to replace these imports with locally grown flowers, she founded Surabhi Agricultural Farm. Surabhi Agricultural Farm began its journey four years ago with the cultivation of marigold flowers. Starting with a modest investment of just 10,000 rupees, Sunita meticulously planned and executed her farming activities. Initially, the farm operated on a small scale, but it gradually expanded to cover 10 kattha (3,380 square meters) of land, which includes 2 kattha from neighboring plots and 8 kattha from other areas. Like many agricultural ventures, Sunita faced several challenges along the way. One significant hurdle was the production of chrysanthemum flowers, which did not yield satisfactory results. Undeterred, she refocused on marigold farming, which proved to be more successful. Another challenge was finding reliable labor for agricultural work, which increased the operational costs. Despite these difficulties, Sunita persevered and continued to innovate, planning to build a tunnel to enhance production in the future. On the opportunity front, Surabhi Agricultural Farm's year-round flower production eliminated the problem of market access. Sunita's flowers reached various markets, including Pokhara, Syangja, Baglung, Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar, Butwal, Bhairahawa, and Tilottama. The consistent demand for her flowers, even in off-seasons, encouraged her to keep expanding her production capabilities. Daayitwa, an organization dedicated to empowering rural entrepreneurs in Nepal, played a crucial role in Sunita's success story. Through its support and resources, Daayitwa helped Sunita navigate the complexities of agricultural entrepreneurship. This partnership provided her with valuable insights and strategies, enabling her to overcome challenges and seize opportunities effectively. Today, Surabhi Agricultural Farm stands as a testament to Sunita's dedication and hard work. The farm's annual revenue has grown significantly, reaching approximately 600,000 to 700,000 rupees. Seasonal earnings vary between 100,000 to 150,000 rupees per season, reflecting the farm's consistent productivity. Beyond monetary gains, Sunita's venture has made a positive impact on the local community. Surabhi Agricultural Farm provides permanent employment to one individual and offers partial employment to two others. This job creation not only supports the local economy but also demonstrates the potential of agricultural entrepreneurship to generate livelihoods. Sunita's initiative has brought about a notable change in the community. By reducing dependency on imported flowers, she has promoted local production and contributed to the region's self-sufficiency. Her success story serves as an inspiration to other aspiring farmers, encouraging them to explore innovative agricultural practices and contribute to the local economy. In conclusion, Sunita Kumari Regmi's journey from a novice farmer to a successful agricultural entrepreneur is a powerful example of determination and innovation. With the support of organizations like Daayitwa, she has not only achieved financial success but also positively impacted her community, creating jobs and fostering local development. Surabhi Agricultural Farm's story is a beacon of hope for rural entrepreneurs, showcasing the transformative potential of agriculture in Nepal.
